OVERVIEW

Explore landmarks from various time periods that show how Old Town has evolved architecturally and culturally. Although the Phoenicians founded Cadiz in the 12th century B.C., many others influenced the city's appearance, including the Romans and Moors. As you walk along the cobbled streets in the ancient district - a delightful jumble of baroque and neoclassical architecture - you will come upon attractions such as Cadiz Cathedral, which replaced an earlier cathedral that was destroyed when the city was sacked in 1596. It is located in El Pópulo, a small neighborhood with more than its share of architectural icons. You will also stroll through some of Old Town's most atmospheric plazas and enjoy free time for shopping or just browsing in one of the most popular squares. At tip of the Old Town peninsula, you will find popular La Caleta Beach, from which you can see the 16th-century Santa Catalina Castle.
