OVERVIEW

Gain an understanding of the history of Sir Bani Yas and the legacy of Sheikh Zayed on an introductory exploration of the island. A founding father of the United Arab Emirates, the sheikh designated nearly half the island as a nature reserve and his vision for conservation is still a driving force. Although the island is known to have been occupied as early as 5,500 BC, one of its most revealing archaeological sites is a late 6th-century Christian monastery. You will see the remains of the church and hear how the people lived there based on the artifacts unearthed on site. You will also visit a desert oasis to observe how water is retained in cisterns. For yet another perspective of life on Sir Bani Yas, you will learn how falcons have long been used for hunting. The majestic bird is so revered that it has become the national symbol of the UAE.
