Explore Akureyri, the cultural and commercial centre of North-Iceland. This is a small ‘city’ with a flourishing art scene as well as an interesting history. It is difficult to find a place in Iceland where Danish colonial influence is as visible as here. Your journey starts at the Akureyri Botanical Garden which houses examples of every plant species indigenous to Iceland. Next, is Nonni’s Museum, which is dedicated to the writer and Jesuit priest Jón Sveinsson, also known as Nonni. He went abroad at twelve years old and was educated in France. He delivered almost five thousand lectures around the world and wrote twelve popular children’s books called Nonni’s books. Continue to Santa’s House, a Christmas store that operates all year, which sells various items related to Christmas. Your might even run into Santa Clause or meet Grýla, the terrifying mother of the thirteen Icelandic Santa’s.
