Your first stop will be the Gate of Mercy synagogue, a tiny unadorned building that is the oldest synagogue in Mumbai. The Victorian-style Magen David Synagogue presents quite a contrast, as it is fronted by pillars and is quite ornate. As more Jews came to India toward the end of the 19th century, Tifereth Synagogue was built nearby to accommodate them. You will also visit Keneseth Eliyahoo, which many consider to be the most beautiful synagogue in the city. As you will discover, the interior is as marvelous as its stone-and-brick exterior. It features decorated pillars, carved marble and a magnificent stained-glass arch rising to the high ceiling.
