Sail a catamaran around the breathtaking sounds surrounding Havelock, the Green-shell Mussel Capital of the World, and then sample the tasty mollusks at a mussel farm.

Begin a picturesque journey due west along Par Road, known as the Golden Mile in regards to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Along the way to the tiny seaside town of Havelock, you'll pass native forests, lovely bays, secluded beaches and coastal plains, a lovely prelude to your arrival at Havelock Marina. Set-off on a scenic cruise along the main channel of Pelorus Sound and one of its major arms, Kenepuru Sound. While cruising, you'll learn about the area's history, the hardy pioneers who settled it, and its economically important green-shell mussel industry.

These elongated mollusks bear a distinct greenish color around the outer lip and inside rim. They possess a sweet flavor and tender, juicy texture, which make them extremely popular among gourmands. You'll have the opportunity to taste these succulent mussels at a farm where they're aqua-cultured on a rope suspended in a natural water environment. Your green-shelled mussels will be freshly steamed and paired with a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc, another signature product made in the Marlborough region.
