OVERVIEW

Zip through the iceberg-dotted waters off Qaqortoq in a Rigid Inflatable Boat known as a RIB and learn fascinating facts about the formation of these sculptural chunks of ice. The surrounding hills somewhat shelter the fjord, which when glass-smooth beautifully reflects the icebergs floating by. While the exact route you take will depend on the weather and wind conditions – which are typically mild in the summer – you can expect an exhilarating ride as the RIB is made for high-speed maneuvers and yet is remarkably stable. The skipper will describe the different types of icebergs, how they calve off the glacial ice sheet and how they follow the prevailing currents until eventually melting. You may spot birds such as Arctic terns and Arctic skuas perched atop the icebergs. Humpback, minke and fin whales are sometimes spotted feeding in these waters before migrating to the Caribbean in the winter.
