A Day At The Beach With Royalty

    Stanley, Falkland Islands

    Duration 7 hrs

Travel by 4x4 to a remote beachside nature preserve to observe and walk among a colony of King penguins, Gentoo penguins and Magellanic penguins. After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a scenic two and one-half hour’s drive north to Johnson’s Harbour and then on to Volunteer Point via a 4x4 vehicle. Along the way, you may spot remnants of the 1982 Falklands War, the result of the Argentine invasion of the British-owned islands. Still, it is the natural beauty and abundant wildlife of this rugged landscape that are most impressive. Birds in particular are the attraction at Volunteer Point, a nature preserve that supports the largest concentration of King penguins in the islands. Volunteer Point is also home to a multitude of Gentoo penguins, Magellanic penguins and dozens of other avian species. As you walk along the beach, you will observe these birds interacting in their native habitat. At up to three feet tall, king penguins look regal even waddling about. Their size and bright orange coloring on their heads and beaks make them easy to distinguish from the other penguins. Gentoo penguins are smaller and sport white feather caps, while Magellanic penguins feature two distinct black stripes across their chests and often bray like donkeys. You may also see ruddy-headed geese, black-throated finches and peregrine falcons, which can reach speeds of up to 200 miles per mile. Before rejoining your vehicle and traveling back to Stanley, you will be provided a boxed lunch.

    Need to Know:

Note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate to strenuous walking over uneven, natural and sandy surfaces. Travel in the 4x4 vehicle is mainly off-road over rough tracks and the ride can be bumpy. Warm layered clothing; cap; sunglasses; and flat, sturdy walking shoes with a closed-toe are recommended. The tour is operated by a driver/guide. Nosy Komba - Isle of Lemurs

    Nosy Be, Madagascar

    Duration 3 3/4 hrs

Enjoy meeting the locals and being entertained by whimsical lemurs on this delightful tour to nearby Nosy Komba.

Board your local boat from the ship's gangway and cruise across the east coast of Nosy Be to Nosy Komba, passing the verdant Lokobe evergreen forest along the way. Reaching the fishing village of Ampangoriana, you will tender ashore (please note it is a "wet" landing) and then have a bit of time to mingle with the locals and browse for souvenirs. Approximately 500 yards from the village is the Black Lemur Sanctuary, home to Madagascar's most famous residents, the black lemurs. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to observe these lively creatures as they leap from tree to tree. The black lemurs are the males and the brown lemurs the females. Although these animals live in the wild, they are tame enough to be fed with bananas and their capricious behavior will no doubt be fun to watch.

Leaving the sanctuary, you will walk to a nearby snack bar where you will be treated to a light snack while relaxing in the shade of a Tamarind tree and taking in the wonderful views of the Lokobe Reserve and surrounding islands. During your break, the local Sakalava embroiders will give you a demonstration on tablecloth making and the village children will perform a brief folk show for you. Free time will be provided for you to stroll on the beach, shop for souvenirs or perhaps take a dip in the ocean.

At the conclusion of your visit, you will re-board your boat and cruise back to Nosy Be and your awaiting ship.

    Need to Know:

Note: This tour includes approximately 1-hour of moderate walking plus any additional walking at the guests' discretion during free time. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns as you must be able to make your own way on and off a small boat. Light weight, casual clothing; a hat; sunglasses; sunscreen; insect repellant and flat, comfortable walking shoes are suggested. Those who wish to swim should wear a swimsuit under their clothing and bring a towel. Any guests who participate in water activities may do so at their own risk and responsibility. While the lemurs are used to interacting with people, guests are reminded that they are still wild animals and their behavior can be unpredictable. Guests should bring along small denominations of Euros or U.S. dollars for any purchases they may wish to make. Wild life sightings are not guaranteed. The transportation used is the best available in this destination; however, it may not be up to the same standards as found in other parts of the world.

    Seal Bay Penguins

    Stanley, Falkland Islands

    Duration 7 hrs

After departing from the pier, you will set off on an exhilarating ride in a 4x4 vehicle, the last 12 miles or so off road. Upon arriving at Port Louis Farm, a member of the family that owns the property will accompany your small group to Seal Bay.

Cave Of Wonders & Altos De Chavon

    Catalina Island, Dominican Republic

    Duration 5 1/2 hrs

Explore a series of caverns decorated with pre-Columbian paintings and a hilltop village designed to replicate a 16th-century Mediterranean village. The caves are truly wondrous and not just because of its hundreds of beautifully preserved native Taino Indian wall paintings, which are known as pictographs. While walking the cave’s winding paths, you will also see abundant geological wonders, which include eerily shaped, dramatically lighted stalactites and stalagmites. Be sure to look into the Water Mirror, a subterranean lake that reflects the unusual formations on the ceiling. Unlike the ancient cave system, the village Altos de Chavon only looks old. Local artisans built it in the 1980s as a cultural and artistic center, and its setting above the Chavon River is spectacular. Architectural highlights include a Grecian-style outdoor amphitheater and the stone St. Stanislaus Church. The village’s Archaeological Regional Museum contains thousands of real Pre-Columbian artifacts that lend insight into the indigenous people.

    Need to Know:

Those guests with mobility concerns are cautioned to evaluate their personal level of ability and stamina. There are stairs and cobble stone paths involved in this tour.
