Explore two of the Ivory Coast's most important cities, both with an African heart and colonial heritage reflected in their architecture. Depart from the pier and head east through Abidjan to nearby Bingerville, which served as the capital of the Ivory Coast for 25 years in the early 1900s. The city is named in honor of Louis-Gustave Binger, a French officer and explorer who was appointed governor of the Ivory Coast in 1893. The French influence is still prevalent throughout the area. Boulevard François Mitterrand connects Abidjan and Bingerville, which sits on a plateau overlooking the lagoon. French colonial buildings in various states of restoration line many of the streets, and French is the official language. Still, driving through Bingerville, you will notice a distinct West African atmosphere. A visit to the Combes Museum reveals the region's prodigious artistic talent, mostly in the form of sculptures depicting the ceremonies and rituals of the Ivory Coast. Other noteworthy attractions include the governor's house - now a boys' orphanage, and botanical gardens. On the journey back to Abidjan, you will pass through Cocody, an upscale residential neighborhood that's also home to the presidential palace and numerous embassies, including the largest United States Embassy in Africa. Then, enjoy a leisurely lunch of traditional dishes at Maquis 331, a favorite neighborhood restaurant. Following lunch, you will re-board your coach and travel directly back to the pier.
