OVERVIEW

Enjoy a meandering stroll through some of the more historical areas of Manila, following a circuitous route that passes through a collection of architectural gems. Two churches along the way are especially fascinating, the first being Quiapo – also known as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene. It is renowned for its statue of a dark-skinned Jesus Christ that missionaries brought to Manila in 1606. The Jesuits established a church in the Santa Cruz Parish around the same time. What stands today on this sacred site is a reconstruction as an earthquake in 1863 and heavy bombing in World War II destroyed the earlier versions. Once you reach Escalta Street, the architecture will embrace many more styles as this thoroughfare is lined with historical buildings and some of Manila’s earliest skyscrapers. Yet another side of Manila awaits you in the world’s oldest Chinatown, home to the Binondo Church.
