OVERVIEW

See landmarks that define Old San Juan, which Ponce de León founded in 1521, and browse the exquisite one-of-a-kind shops that line the winding cobblestone streets. As you meander through this wonderfully atmospheric district, you will pass historical landmarks such as the venerated Cathedral de San Juan Bautista, which holds the tomb of Ponce de León, and the official residence of the governor, known as La Fortaleza – literally The Fortress. The route will take you through several leafy plazas, including one with a towering monument to Christopher Columbus and another that was forgotten for nearly a century until unearthed and restored to its original grandeur. The shops along the way will be just as inspiring, especially those featuring works from artists such as Ángel Botello, the so-called Caribbean Gauguin, who died in San Juan. You can also expect to browse a chocolate shop, another selling tropical spices and a jewelry store.
