Settle in for a panoramic and circuitous drive around western St. Lucia that will reveal its most alluring natural and historical attractions. Just outside the capital of Castries, you will find the Inniskilling monument, which commemorates the British defeating the French in 1796 and capturing the strategically important hilltop there. The Victorian-style Howelton Estate perches on another hilltop nearby and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. While touring, you may see batik fabrics being made using an Indonesian technique of wax-resistance dyeing. Driving on, you will enter a bucolic landscape of banana plantations tucked between undulating hills before pausing to walk through the fishing village Anse La Raye. One of its highlights is an unexpectedly large Catholic church. More gorgeous coastal views await you from the lookout at Marigot Bay and from the grand colonial-era mansion St. Marks, from which you will likely spot your cruise ship.
