Meander through the wonderfully atmospheric heart of Bruges, admiring the medieval and Gothic architecture that earned the city a World Heritage site designation. After departing from the pier, you will soon reach the historical center of Bruges, whose medieval buildings and serene canals lend it a fairytale atmosphere. UNESCO has declared this district a World Heritage site for being an outstanding example of a medieval settlement and because of the beautifully preserved brick Gothic architecture. Your exploration of Bruges, known as Die Scone, meaning “The Beautiful,” will begin in Burg Square, which named for the castle that once stood there. Landmarks now surround the square, including the 12th-century Basilica of the Holy Blood, which supposedly contains a cloth with the blood of Jesus Christ. The 14th-century Renaissance-style city hall is also here, as Burg Square is considered the administrative center of Bruges. As you proceed along the enchanting streets, you will pass countless architecturally significant buildings that have been repurposed as boutiques, galleries and restaurants. You will also see attractions as diverse as the Half Moon Brewery and the Church of Our Lady, which took two centuries to build. It holds the Madonna of Bruges, an exquisite sculpture by Michelangelo. Upon reaching the main shopping district of Steenstraat, you will have time to explore further on your own and do some souvenir shopping. Handmade Belgium lace is one of most prized local products, as more than 70% of the country’s lace makers once worked in Bruges.
