During the drive inland, you will notice the terrain becoming hillier with an abundance of sprawling farms and idyllic valleys such as Guadalupe. Its microclimate is similar to that in the Mediterranean as the summers are relatively cool with constant ocean breezes. Red wine grapes, in particular, flourish there, and over the past three decades or so, more than 150 wineries have become established along the valley’s wine route. Experience life in the days of the Klondike Gold Rush through activities that defined Alaska in the late 1890s. Upon arriving in Dredge Town, a replica of typical gold rush community, you will watch a sled dog demonstration and interact with puppies that will eventually pull sleds for the famed Iditarod annual competition. You will also learn to pan gold and extract gold nuggets from a stream with a water sluice much like those that the prospectors used. You can then bring your pay dirt to the assayer’s office to determine its value. The gold will be yours to keep. The term “skid row” was coined in this now-elegant district, a reference to the logged trees that were once slid down greased skids to the sawmill. Learn about the history of the area from your guide while you’ll pass by the city’s highlights. You’ll stop at the elegant Riviera del Pacifico, a once dazzling beach resort and casino. For generations Tlingit villages have maintained a tradition of welcoming visitors in regal style. In this Native community, tribal elders have worked hard to pass on the traditions that have long defined their culture. Upon arrival to Saxman Native Village, you’ll be warmly welcomed in the Tlingit dialect and experience a captivating performance by the Cape Fox Dancers in the Beaver Clan House. This traditional display of Tlingit music and dance, accompanied by drums and native regalia, vividly narrates the tales of legendary warriors and tribal ancestors. Following the performance, your tour host will guide you through the canoe canopy, explaining canoe making and traditional fishing techniques. You'll also visit the Carving Center to see artisans at work on totem poles and paint making.
