OVERVIEW

Visit a mountain village where life has changed little through the centuries. Although Bodrum is a more modern resort city, it too exudes history as you will discover at the Myndos Gate and at the Roman amphitheater, both of which date to the 4th century B.C. Pausing for photos there will put you in a historical mindset that is ideal for exploring Etrim, one of the region’s oldest, most untouched villages. Its 300 or so residents still practice traditional life through occupations such as sheep farming and carpet making. The villagers’ weaving and dying techniques have been fiercely preserved through the years, and the resulting Turkish carpets and kilims are highly valued. As you meander the streets, you will likely see artisans – all of whom are women – weaving extraordinary carpets in a multitude of colors. They not only card and spin the raw wool, they make the natural dyes from vegetables, herbs and walnut shells.
