Praia is the capital of Cape Verde, a chain of islands off the West African Coast. Founded in the 17th century by the Portuguese, Cape Verde declared independence in 1975. The city is located on Santiago Island - the country's largest, and is considered the economic, tourist and cultural centre of Cape Verde.
