Today's Great Stirrup Cay is an unspoiled paradise of pristine beaches and swaying palms, but in days of yore this island saw its share of swashbuckling pirates and legendary sea captains. This island's history is as colourful as the reefs surrounding it.

Stroll the beaten and unbeaten paths of Great Stirrup Cay and you'll be greeted by every manner of plant and animal. This protected marine life sanctuary is a haven for all types of things that grow, hop, soar, slither, swim and even change colours.

Dry Broadleaf Evergree - This low-lying plant life (usually called a coppice) covers more of Great Stirrup Cay than any other plant.

Red Mangrove - This plant grows aerial roots that grow in arches over the water, providing prime nesting and hunting habitat. Check them out on a kayak trip along the coast.

Coconut Palm - They can grow as tall as 100 feet and usually produce about 30-50 coconuts in a year. Heads Up!

Gumbo Limbo - Those trees are also called the "Tourist Tree" because they have a bright red peeling bark, much like a tourist with a bad sunburn. A good reminder to apply sunscreen.

Sea Grape - Bearing fruit that looks like grapes, this sculptural tree has large round leathery leaves painted with bright red veins.

Cuban Tree Frog - These nocturnal amphibians grow 3 to 6 inches long and can change colours depending on their temperature and environment. If you spot one, chances are your ship has sailed.

Black Iguana - The fastest running lizards on earth, they are capable of growing up to 5 feet long. Although mostly harmless, please don't try and pat them.

Green Anoles - They can change colours from dark brown to a vivid green; the males have a large red or pink throat fan, which is used for establishing territory and mating.

Green Heron - A tiny, intelligent bird that uses a variety of bait like bread crust, insects, twigs or feathers to attract small fish.

Royal Tern - This migrating seabird can be seen diving for fish just off the coast and is distinguished by its long yellow bill, grey and white body, and black cap and tail.

Caribbean Stingray - Plentiful in the waters around the Bahamas, these friendly creatures can be found on sandy bottoms and in the lagoons around the island. Don't be shocked if one nuzzles past you in the water.
Great Stirrup Cay is not only teeming with native species, it also offers an abundance of choices – ranging from fun activities like kayaking and wave runner tours to sunbathing and nature trails.
