OVERVIEW

Begin your walking tour at Sitka National Historical Park, where your local guide will share stories of the 1804 Battle of Alaska, a key event marking the start of Russian colonial influence. As you stroll through the lush rainforest trails, enjoy the fresh air, and explore the park’s totem collection and cultural exhibits at the visitor center. The walk continues along the harbor’s shoreline, showcasing Victorian homes, ornate churches, and Sheldon Jackson College, home to the Sheldon Jackson Museum. Established in 1888, the museum preserves Alaska’s natural and cultural history with a vast collection of Native art and artifacts. Your final stop is St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Cathedral, a reconstructed church built on the site of the original 1840 structure. Despite the 1966 fire, over 95% of the original religious icons were saved and now decorate the rebuilt cathedral. The tour ends with a self-guided visit in the cathedral and free time to explore the galleries and shops downtown.
