Ride through the atmospheric streets of Old Town in a vintage American-made car and explore further on your own following a traditional lunch. The car will be a classic that is at least 50 years old, a perfect complement to this UNESCO World Heritage site district, which was founded in 1533. The drive through the Getsemani quarter, which former slaves settled after their emancipation in the mid-19th century, will be particularly enlightening as it is adorned with vibrant murals that reflect the local Afro-Caribbean history. The drive will continue through the renown Cartagena Old Town with its many highlights. After sampling a variety of typical dishes, you will enjoy a guided tour of Old Town, whose defensive walls were constructed in the late 16th century. The district’s colonial architecture is outstanding and many of the buildings have been converted into shops. During free time, you might browse the stores for designer fashions and emerald jewelry. Colombia is the world’s largest producer of emeralds, so you can expect quite a selection.
