OVERVIEW

Paddle a canoe down the Sundays River in the shadow of the Addo Elephant National Park and observe the indigenous wildlife, especially water birds. While there is no telling what you will see, birds that have been spotted along the river include giant kingfishers, curlew sandpipers, greater flamingoes and little terns. The African fish eagle is one of the area’s most regal birds, especially the adults, which closely resemble bald eagles. If you see one, be sure to scan the sky or branches nearby, as they are usually seen in pairs. After disembarking, you will walk a short distance through the bush, which is covered in native shrubbery known as fynbos. The biodiversity is extraordinary as the bush contains thousands of plant species, including the king protea, South Africa’s national flower. When in bloom, the large petals of the king protea resemble a crown. A braai – South Africa’s version of a BBQ – follows.
