OVERVIEW

Travel through the spectacularly beautiful Portage Valley on the way to Anchorage, where you will browse a fascinating heritage center that celebrates Alaska’s native people. As you board the coach for 90 minutes narrated scenic drive through the pristine wilderness, you will behold natural wonders such as the Turnagain Arm waterway and the Chugach National Forest, as well as manmade structures that include the longest dual-use tunnel in North America. Commentary will describe many of the sights and historical events that have affected this area such as the devastating 1964 earthquake. The focus will turn to the state’s indigenous cultures at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. During free time, you might watch a dance performance, listen to storytellers, meet wood carvers and see life-size traditional native dwellings.
